OUR IMPACT

Since our founding in 2013, Students Deserve has reimagined public education across the Los Angeles Unified School District to make Black lives matter in schools. Students Deserve and our partners have won: 

  • Since 2020, $25 million is divested annually from the Los Angeles School Police Department (LASPD)

  • Since 2020, $120 million is annually invested in resources & supports for Black youth & families through the Black Student Achievement Plan (BSAP)

  • By 2025, there will be 70 community schools established in the Los Angeles Unified School District

  • As of 2025. there are over 30 Students Deserve chapters across the Los Angeles Unified School District

  • Students Deserve and our partners have achieved the largest divestment amount from school police in the nation

  • With our coalition partners, Students Deserve has ended school policing like daily "random" searches and school police use of pepper spray against students in LAUSD

  • 2024

    Won additional $5 million divestment from Los Angeles School Police Department (LASPD) & school surveillance technologies

  • 2023

    Won the Community Based Safety Resolution to implement safe passage in BSAP schools across LAUSD

  • 2021

    Won creation of the Black Student Achievement Plan (BSAP) & the expansion to BSAP by $95 million annually

  • 2020

    The Police-Free LAUSD Coalition is created. Students Deserve and its partners win a $25 million divestment from LASPD, cops off campus, & a ban on pepper spray

  • 2019

    After a historic Student-Parent-Teacher Strike, Students Deserve and our partners won an end to random searches & first 30 LAUSD Community Schools

  • 2018

    Launched Students Deserve chapters at 17 schools and hosted Reimagine Public Education with LAUSD Superintendent

  • 2017

    Won first LAUSD "Community Schools" Resolution with partners in Reclaim Our Schools LA

  • 2016

    First "Making Black Lives Matter in Schools" panel at Dorsey High School
