COALITION STRUCTURE

Reclaim Our Schools LA (Reclaim) is a diverse labor-community coalition of students, parents, families & educators working to improve access, advance opportunities and ensure racial justice in public education for all students in Los Angeles. Students Deserve is one of the four anchor organizations of Reclaim, along with Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE), Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE) and United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA).

COALITION MISSION

We envision every public school to be the heart of the community. Our coalition is working with LAUSD to adopt a district-wide strategy that puts us on a path to make each and every neighborhood public school a great school. Along with prominent academics, researchers, and public school leaders, we work with LAUSD to transform our neighborhood schools into Community Schools.

Community schools

The Community Schooling approach combines community partnerships and services with parent, teacher, and student involvement. It includes restorative justice practices, the elimination of school police, reciprocal education pedagogy, and shared leadership to dramatically expand educational opportunities for our students.

We stand for a fully-funded, fully-staffed public education for all students, including support for neighborhood community schools. Together, we advance racial justice in LAUSD that undoes historic, and current, impacts of systemic racism, supports Black student achievement, eliminates school police, and creates positive supports for students, families and educators based upon restorative practices. 

● Coalition Impact

  • Won a commitment from LAUSD to create 70 Community Schools by 2023.

  • Won nearly $14 million in funding for the development of Community Schools.

  • Together with Coalition partners, Reclaim Our Schools LA has won restorative justice across LAUSD through policies like a6% pay raise for teachers, smaller class sizes and reductions in standardized testing, and school police are no longer allowed to be stationed on school campuses
