● Coalition Overview

tHE people’s plan for police-free schools

The Police-Free LAUSD Coalition represents a community-led vision for transforming LAUSD's schools into culturally relevant, holistically supportive spaces, where all youth can thrive.

In our report, The People’s Plan for Police-Free Schools, we demand that LAUSD dismantle all of its oppressive and white supremacist structures-including the Los Angeles School Police Department-and that the district train and invest in evidence-based and community-centered practices that support, rather than criminalize, Black and Brown youth.

The Police-Free LAUSD coalition Structure

The Police Free LAUSD Coalition builds community power with over 20 youth-serving organizations in Los Angeles. Students Deserve is one of the anchor organizations for the Coalition.

Coalition Mission

The Police Free LAUSD Coalition is working to reimagine school safety in Los Angeles public schools and communities. By building community power, the Coalition has co-created and advised the implementation of evidence-based alternatives to policing in schools through the Black Student Achievement Plan (BSAP).

Black student achievement plan (bsap)

The historic Black Student Achievement Plan (BSAP) was created in 2020. BSAP works to address the longstanding disparities in educational outcomes between Black students and their non-Black peers by providing culturally-responsive curricula, increasing student supports like school counselors and mental health advisors, and investing in community-based safety programs like Safe Passage.

The Largest divestment in the nation

With over $125+ million annually invested in the Black Student Achievement Plan since 2020, the Police Free LAUSD Coalition helped to win the largest divestment in school police in the nation. By organizing students, parents, and educators alongside youth-serving organizations, the Police Free LAUSD Coalition helps LAUSD schools divest from policing and invest in community-based safety.
